Hi, Carol
I am a guidance counsellor for Anglophone West School District in NB. Your video was introduced to teachers and students in NB on Pink Shirt Day through the NB Education Portal thanks to our Bullying Awareness and Prevention Learning Specialist, Bruce Van Stone.
I so appreciated hearing your heartfelt message. As a counsellor, and as a mother of two teenage daughters, your message resonates with my own beliefs, concerns and worries for our youth today. Youth, as has always been the case, believe they are invincible. This is a wonderful gift that can open many possibilities for a bright future for them but with today’s technology, vulnerability has never been greater. To hear about Amanda, about her typical childhood successes and failures, will hopefully help teens today to see that they need to be careful on the internet, that this type of situation can happen to anyone from any social group. But more importantly, I hope that your message of “smothering the world…with kindness” reaches through so that we can all be more kind and respectful to those around us. Only then can we hope to put an end to such needless loss of life and potential.
I so admire the strength that it takes to practice the forgiveness and encouragement that you are modeling towards those who were involved in the bullying of your daughter, Amanda. Encouragement for them to learn from this tragedy and move forward by changing their behaviours– to “be kind and respectful to others”, to make a positive difference in the world.
Thank you so much for sharing your heart, and for making Amanda’s Legacy one of hope!
