May 4 – Peanuts and jelly tots …

Carnivals, clowns and horses … I remember those days when the circus would come to town.  The days when there were still live horses and elephants.  The clowns were silly beeping their horns and riding their unicycles.  The elephants were huge and when they pooped on the ground, we all laughed.  I think Port Coquitlam is one of those rare places that still celebrates May Day with a traditional parade.  It is the 100th birthday of the city where my kids were born and raised.  Their is a royal May Day party and the parade has floats and princesses, clowns, bands, motorcycle brigades and there is also the carnival.  When Amanda was younger, we would go to the carnival with her best friends.  Lots of money was lost of the games and rides.  I think we could have bought many Build-a-Bears with the $$ we spent on the coin tosses and balloon pops and oh right, remember this one, get the basketball in the basket game.  Now why was that so hard?  I think I still have a collection of the little cheap stuffies that the kids won.

But as always, the weekend wasn’t complete without a snowcone, blue cotton candy (not pink) and mini donuts.  Uggg …. the cotton candy didn’t really work out if it was a rainy weekend.

Eventually it wasn’t me going with Amanda and her bff’s.  It became Amanda and her friends going down on Friday night and hanging out on the rides, etc.  I guess it was cheaper.  A ride ticket and a bit extra.  Eventually, Amanda learned that it was better to not go to the fair and buy clothes with her money.

Awww… the logic of budgeting.  So when do most kids realize that what they have in their personal space is lucky?  That phones are privileges and not rights, as are most pieces of technology.  When they demand more not realizing that their phone plans are at least $50+ per month.  Why is is important to have name brand clothing?  To buy clothes at A & F and Hollister so that they can be carrying the shopping bag around the mall.

When did kids get unhappy with Sears, the Bay or Zellers?  Do they not realize that there are families that still shop at those places because it’s good and affordable?  Why is it that kids get picked on for what they wear?  Or for individual styles and differences.

I was out and about all day.  I told my counsellor about the creepy people in the world.  He was interested and saddened by the state of society.  He asked me where these people come from.  I didn’t have a real answer for him.  I also got a message from someone who knew someone else attending a gala about teen suicide awareness (which is huge and important).  The person attending didn’t know me but knew about me.  Now here is the good thing about social media.  I had her cell number.  I put it in my computer and was to iMessage her.  She asked me for some words to read at the gala which she was presently at.  I typed in a page for her to read.  Sent it.  And poof, there it was.  The wonders of technology are amazing if used correctly.

I will share the words here:

“I’m struggling to stay in this world, because everything just touches me so deeply. I’m not doing this for attention. I’m doing this to be an inspiration and to show that I can be strong. I did things to myself to make pain go away, because I’d rather hurt myself then someone else. Haters are haters but please don’t hate, although I’m sure I’ll get them. I hope I can show you guys that everyone has a story, and everyone’s future will be bright one day, you just gotta pull through. I’m still here aren’t I?”

~ Amanda Todd (September 7, 2012)

Thank you for listening to Amanda’s words which were written on her You Tube video.

Bullying/cyberbullying is a major cause of distress among young people today.  As a concerned community, we much all work together to ‘make a difference’ in the world for this generation and our future ones.  No child, youth or adult should walk in fear of being bullied.  Nor should anyone suffer the distresses of mental health concerns that may go along with the aspects of being bullied or harassed.

Amanda was my Princess Snowflake. When you look the word snowflake up in the Urban Dictionary, you will find this:

Snowflake – A very unique  girl that no one else can duplicate because she is one of a kind.   When you think about snowflakes, they are unique and individual.  No two are alike.

Everyone in the world is unique. We are all fragile and different.  No one should be made fun of or laughed at because they are different from someone else.

Amanda suffered much torment and distress from others.  Many are out there in the world speaking words for my daughter Amanda because she is not here…… but it is now known that she wanted her voice heard.

She wanted to share her thoughts about being bullied and how it hurt.  How she suffered from depression and anxiety and wasn’t understood by others.  She would want you to know how much bullying hurt her and how it is hurting thousands of other children, youth and adults every day.   The combination of both bullying and mental health brought her much pain.

Amanda couldn’t stop it happening to her, but it was her dream to make a difference for other children – to tell her story so she might help them.  As more people know about Amanda’s story, then more can of us can work towards making a change in the way we think and treat others.

Amanda’s story is worldwide and universal.  She would be amazed and surprised to know what has happened.  Amanda left behind a story which is now The Amanda Todd Legacy.

Please help to support the Amanda Todd Legacy by sharing your stories about awareness to others and help in de-stigmatizing mental health to all those around us.

A Legacy/Memorial Fund has been set up in Amanda’s name.  It is hoped that the $$ raised will be put towards the following areas:   Bullying/Cyberbullying Awareness programs,  Youth and Adolescent Mental Health,  and online exploitation.

A friend wrote to me last night and said: ‘As you go forward in the days and months ahead consider carefully what and how much can be done within the schools. Consider what families can do and what should be tolerated.  Amanda’s legacy should be one that teaches awareness and that our society will only succeed via tolerance, compassion, community, and forgiveness.

“It takes a village to raise a child. —- We all live in that village.”

Thank you …

I think one of the main things that affected me most from seeing her Youtube video ,, was seeing those words in her description ,, especially the last part -” I hope I can show you guys that everyone has a story, and everyone’s future will be bright one day, you just gotta pull through. I’m still here aren’t I?”,, this is the part that makes me take a deep breath and chokes me up. Then after that its letting the lyrics of those two powerful songs she chose to go along with the vid to sink in. Many powerful words in this blog. I just love that “It takes a village to raise a child. —- We all live in that village.” just so true. You had mentioned that basket ball game with the baskets in the carnival , and why was that so hard….. how much people have lost with them games,, i was just reading an article about someone who lost their life savings on that very game, here it is… http://www.torontosun.com/2013/05/01/man-loses-life-savings-on-carnival-game

There is so much courage and wisdom in the words Amanda wrote to accompany her YouTube video. The world has lost a wonderful child. Sadly it has also exposed the ugly underbelly of the internet subhuman world (both the bullies and the predators). This was a world many of us were not even aware of but the learning needed to happen.

  7. I realized what I had was lucky when my parents just stop buying me what I wanted, I had to save up for something. After I got a job I came to appreciate what I have alot more. as for the name brand clothing and stuff… middle school/ high school really is about fitting it and the peer pressure… just wear the brands your friends wear… I never really got into it I just woke up grabbed whatever shirt and whatever jeans and went. Peer pressure is the biggest influence when it comes to fitting in, and mass media is the source which activates the desires for “cool” material things. Too bad it’s all about money, too bad that will never change. These young minds must be taught what is of true value in their world…not the name brand items that can tear and tatter, be lost, or stolen. Strong, good morals will not tear or tatter, cannot get lost or stolen from a person who has them embedded in their heart. This is the foundation which should be laid…the code to live by, which carries over into every action that person undertakes. Isn’t it funny Carol, how one word (CREEPY) can explain so much as defined? It’s so much easier to describe than sentence after sentence…CREEPY says alot! Where do these people come from? Obviously not an ideal upbringing, and the “quasi” world which the internet gives without preference, is a bonanza of distorted opportunies for these CREEPS. Imagine if there were no internet, I wonder how they would accomplish their twisted missions? Telephone? In person? A book? I imagine these CREEPS are not too brazen with their words if they went face to face with someone. The brilliant/horrid internet is similar to a video game…playing make-believe games with others…but retreat is all too easy…except for young minds who might view the internet as a part of their own minds, which makes it harder to “walk away.” Did you ever spend maybe an hour online, and then when you get off, feel as if you entered into another dimension when you leave the room, or go outside? Scary…

It is so sad that the world was sound asleep when her cry for help went out,
But now her voice is being heard and the winds of change is starting to happen,
One of her dreams is becoming a reality, But we have to keep fighting the good fight and stand together in this fight, and than Maybe, just maybe one day all humanity will walk hand in hand instead of being a dysfunctional family ruled by greed and selfishness. (RIP sweet angel, We love you)
