Today’s date is November 12th. Amanda’s bday would have been and is November 27th. She would have been 18 this year.
There was so much she was looking forward to in finishing and graduating from school. She wanted to possibly be a hair stylist. Even going so far as taking a tour of the hair salon classes at one of the local high schools.
She couldn’t wait for graduation – the dinner dance and walking across the stage. Everytime we passed by a store with dresses, she would say ‘I might like that dress for grad mom’. I have a photo of her in a dress she tried on at a store in the few weeks before she died. Ironically enough, it was purple. (will try to find)
As we approach, my Christmas lights are already up as we did purple lights for Halloween. It’s funny how on Halloween, they sell purple but not really for Christmas. All that is needed to be put up now are the snowflakes outside and the lit tree. For many who don’t know the story — every year since Amanda was little, she asked if the Christmas lights could be turned on for her birthday as they made her feel happy and special. So through wind, rain and sometimes snow, they were put up and shining brightly for November 27th.
This year will be no different. There are already two houses on my cul-de-sac with their lights up already. I hope that many more will do so by 11/27. For me, it says ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY Babygirl. It’s your 18th year’. For me, it will be harder. Remembering the day I gave birth to my beautiful girl and she came out squealing and full of energy. She was 10 days late and needed an escort.
So.. if you planning to start putting up your Christmas lights up and get them up before Nov 27th, please consider turning them on that evening in memory of Amanda and what she has made us all think about for the past two years. Post a photo to #amandatoddlegacy or #happybirthdayamanda.
